Ten Drum Artist-in-Residence Project (TDAiRP) is a one-month residence project for artists, which was initiated in 2012 by Shih HSIEH (founder of Ten Drum Cultural Creative Group) and Hsin-Yi CHANG (AxE Arts Management). In the long term, TDAiRP is intended to stimulate dialogue and discussions between the public and the cultural and natural environment in spaces of industrial heritage.

 

On a yearly basis, TDAiRP invites international artists from different fields of art to come to Taiwan to accomplish their commissioned works in the unique cultural and geographic context of two well-known sugar refineries in the South of Taiwan that have been recognized  sites of industrial heritage. Artists in the fields of in-situ, sound, sculpture and land art are considered prior candidates for TDAiRP. Their concepts and works have to be strongly related to the above industrial sites and to embody the ideas of humanism. The sites for the Artist-in-Residence project are located in Tainan (Ten Drum Rentan Creative Park) and in Kaohsiung (Ten Drum Ciaotan Creative Park).

 

As initiators of TDAiRP, we endeavor to promote the multicultural heritage of Taiwan on the international scene by providing this cross-cultural/regional residence platform for innovative artists from abroad. Since 2014, TDAiRP has been developing a curator partnership with GRAME – the National Centre of Music Creation based in Lyon -, an outstanding professional institution for initiating collaborations between technology and art in France. GRAME now annually recommends one emerging sound artist from France for participation in the TDAiRP. 

 

Shih HSIEH, founder of the Group, is a well-known percussionist of Taoism traditional percussion music in Taiwan. In 2001, Hsieh founded the legendary Ten Drum Art Percussion Group who has been playing on the world’s stages since then. Hsieh constantly focuses on cultural and environmental sustainability issues such as industrial heritage conservation, a modern concept of traditional percussion music education, and community developments in Taiwan.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

「十鼓文創國際藝術家進駐園區邀請委創計畫」由十鼓文創創辦人謝十先生發起，創見藝管團隊營運總監張欣怡女士負責邀展概念策劃，並由十鼓文創團隊執行佈展。此計畫源起於2012年，隨著台南十鼓仁糖文創園區營運成熟，以及高雄十鼓橋糖文創園區正式對外開園，十鼓期許能以保存台灣百年糖業文化及其工業化遺跡，繼續為台灣文化的向外推展及在地活化持續付出心力。以立足台灣、珍視本土多元文化，和展望國際、雙向交流的長遠眼界，此計畫於焉成形。

 

此計畫考量十鼓文創園區與南台灣民眾間厚實的在地鏈結性，基於長期與國際交流的前瞻性，每年引薦國際藝術家到臺灣進行為期一個月的駐村和現地創作。由計畫發起人謝十著手規劃，十鼓文創園區裡和保留台灣百年製糖工業遺產文化密切相關的空間場域，提供給受邀的國際藝術家進行現地製作(In-situ project)。這些供藝術家創作的特定空間場域，多半與台南、高雄兩地幾代居民的民生息息相關，例如百年製糖廠、提煉糖蜜的糖蜜槽、製糖工人作業室，或具有歷史背景的日據時代防空洞，又或者是擁有南台灣生態多樣性的環境風貌：榕樹群、鷥鷺草原、聽雨軒生態池等。藝術家受該地人文歷史和空間環境啓發，為台灣大眾和十鼓園區留下意義非凡的作品。獲邀的藝術家於駐村期間完成作品設置後，原地保留並對外長期展出，十鼓文創團隊協助作品之教育推廣和維護。

 

2014年起，此計畫正式與法國頗具盛名的「GRAME里昂國立音樂創作中心」(GRAME – Centre national de création musicale)共同合作，每年向台灣大眾以及喜愛欣賞科技、聲音藝術的愛好者，引薦目前法國該領域所關注的創作新銳，以及獨具生活哲思或趣味的藝術表現形式。該中心藝術總監暨策展人詹姆士．吉魯東(James Giroudon)與法國里昂高等美術學院教授等到十鼓雙文創園區參訪，t除驚嘆園區不僅重現屬於台灣的糖業歷史遺跡，甚至活化了該地域及其腹地的人文生態景觀，園區彷彿隱身都市的綠洲，能與歐洲活化工業文化遺產的實例相互媲美，台灣此處完整保留製糖工業文化遺產，讓糖廠宛若新生。

 

參與此計畫的創作者，其作品語彙除了具有厚實的美學底藴之外，亦須考量創作理念能引起在地民眾之共鳴，更期待能透過新穎的創作表現型式，突破文化、國籍、年齡、性別，甚至打破學養跨界間的藩籬，逐步落實美育賞析於日常生活之中，體現處處留心皆是美，理解美術館的典藏靈感也是源自於生活和自身敏銳的五感。
